Ernest Hardman served in the Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) from 1940 - 1947. He helped, whilst serving with DSTO in MV Theems, in the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Le Havre in June 1940. He was hurt during the evacuation, receiving a bomb splinter wound on his right shin bone.

He also worked as a supply officer at Gdansk, Poland, serving there until 1947.

He received the Defence Medal in recognition of the period he served during World War Two.
