Vera Laughton Mathews
Vera Laughton Mathews was an ex-suffragette and had been an officer in charge of the Crystal Palace Wren unit during World War One.
She became WRNS Director on 11 April and had the necessary leadership skills to restart the service. She set about the organisation of the WRNS along with a small staff. She was responsible to the Admiralty Board for the recruitment, efficiency, welfare and discipline of the organisation.
