The career of a World War Two Navy artificer
Clifford Simkin came from an engineering background and volunteered to join the Royal Navy in 1939, serving as an artificer during World War Two.
Being an artificer was a highly specialised and technically demanding job. During the war they were valuable and in high demand. Simkin and many like him endured more than thought possible. They worked under the severe pressures of time, machinery and enemy bombardment with little self-regard and with great humour and fortitude.
