Propaganda Posters and the Royal Navy

In June and July 2007 the Royal Naval Museum worked with a class of 12 and 13 year-olds from Mayfield School in Portsmouth as part of the larger Heritage Lottery Funded ‘Sea Your History’ project.

The aim of Sea With Your Own Eyes was to work with the class to highlight the uses of World War One and World War Two propaganda posters featuring the Royal Navy.

Working with a free-lance artist, the class were then encouraged to produce their own versions of propaganda posters.

The first session took place at the Royal Naval Museum where the students had the opportunity to learn from representatives from the curatorial, education and Sea Your History research staff.

The students then worked with a free-lance artist that day with subsequent art sessions taking place at Mayfield School throughout the two-month period.

Using what they had learned at the museum and from painting and art techniques introduced to them all children were encouraged to work in groups or individually to produce their own posters.

The final poster, however, incorporates elements of all the work produced by the students and will be on display in the Royal Naval Museum’s Education Center.

The following pages describe the lesson plans for each session. The plans are split as follows -

  • A day at the Museum

  • Back at school

  • Final artwork
