The career of the Second Sea Lord who banned the naval rum ration
Sent to Britannia Royal Naval College in 1924 because his mother could not afford to keep him at public school, Frank Twiss became one of the top-ranking officers in the Royal Navy.
During Twiss' 46-year career, he experienced success and hardship - during World War Two his ship sank and he became a prisoner of war. After the War he witnessed, and played a part in, dramatic technological and social changes.
As Second Sea Lord Twiss made major changes to the Royal Navy, including the abolition of the iconic naval rum ration.
