Fancy dress dance at Camp Groningen

Fancy dress dance at Camp Groningen

A photograph showing Royal Navy personnel at a fancy dress dance at the Groningen Internment Camp in Holland in 1915. The camp was predominantly made up of members of the First Royal Naval Brigade who had been caught in occupied territory after the British withdrawal from Antwerp during World War One. Evenings within the camp would have been extremely boring for the internees and entertainments including concerts, plays and boxing displays would have helped to pass the time. Many of these activities were held in the camp's recreation hall.
