Photograph of Gen Montgomery with rear Admiral Re McGregor addressing ships company of HMS Kent at Scapa prior to op overlord 1944. Montgomery was a competent and experienced general, chosen to lead the Allied land forces in Operation Overlord. Although his self-confidence irritated colleagues and his relations with the Americans was not always cordial; his experience fighting Rommel and the Germans made him a perfect candidate for Operation Overlord.
