Development of the Royal Navy submarine base in Gosport

The Royal Navy built the submarine shore establishment HMS Dolphin around the site of the old fortifications known as Fort Blockhouse in Gosport. First used as a military base in 1431, the Royal Navy took it over in 1904. They had taken the name 'Dolphin' from an old training vessel berthed alongside the submarine base from 1906 to 1923 and used as a depot ship for the submariners.
