Growth of the Royal Navy Submarine base in Malta

From the early twentieth century the submarine base in Malta occupied the buildings of a former lazaretto or leper hospital that stood on the southern shore of Manoel Island in Marsamxett Harbour. The Navy named it HMS Talbot. The visiting submarines would lie alongside the hospital’s southern walls, which rose steeply from the water’s edge, or at buoys placed in Lazaretto Creek. During the twentieth century HMS Talbot saw many changes to its defence.
