Introduction – The Royal Marines and the Fire Fighters’ Strike
During the Fire Fighters’ Strike in the winter of 1977 – 1978 around 2100 Royal Marines, Royal Navy and Army personnel maintained the UK’s firefighting facilities for nine weeks. 'Operation Burberry' is one example of how the Royal Marines perform non-military duties to maintain law and order and aid the civilian population - termed in the military as 'aid to the civil power'.
