Sir Frank Twiss
The naval career of Sir Frank Twiss is profiled in the Navy’s People ‘Themes’ section of Sea Your History. Here are some photographs and documents relating to his career beginning with his first commission as a midshipman to his final position of Second Sea Lord.
Spirit Ration Card dated, 16th July 1970.
This card covers the last ever two weeks of the naval rum ration on the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle. Black printed template on card with rubber stamp with the date '16 JUL 1970' on it. The tradition of the rum ration began in the Royal Navy in 1667. However, in 1970 Second Sea Lord Frank Twiss abolished the Royal Navy rum ration for sailors in an attempt to tackle the problems of drunkeness and inefficiency on ship.
