A C Green and the Royal Marines Band Service
Royal Marine Bandsman A C Green is profiled in the Navy’s People ‘Themes’ section of Sea Your History. Here are some items, photographs and documents relating to his career and the history of the Royal Marines Band Service.
Officer Command Royal Marines and Non Commissioned Officers at Scapa, HMS Benbow 1917.
Picture features 'Naval Lives' subject Bandmaster A C Green in the front row on the left-hand side. Benbow was one of the ships that Green served in during World War One. During the First World War bandsmen would have been serving in HM Battleships and Cruisers keeping the ship's company entertained and boosting their morale. They also would have aided the daily routine of the ship by performing music at drill and religious ceremonies. Another important function the band would have been in the Transmitting Stations of the ship, a key part in the operation of the gunnery system.
